What is Plywood? A Straightforward Guide to Types & Uses

What is Plywood? A Straightforward Guide to Types & Uses

Plywood is one of the most versatile sheet materials in the timber world—and at Wood Green Timber, we supply it for everything from roofing and flooring to boxing-in, van lining, furniture building, and general DIY.

But what exactly is plywood? What’s the difference between “WBP,” structural, or hardwood-faced ply? And which one do you actually need?

Here’s a no-nonsense guide to help you choose the right ply for your next project.

? What is Plywood, Exactly?

Plywood is made by bonding together thin layers (plies) of wood veneer, with the grain direction alternating in each layer. This gives it strength, stability, and resistance to warping.
It’s available in a range of thicknesses and finishes—some better suited for structural work, others for decorative use.

? Common Types of Plywood You’ll See at Wood Green Timber

1. Structural Hardwood Plywood (often referred to as “WBP”)

  • Your go-to ply for roofing, flooring, walls, and general building work.

  • Bonded with strong glue suitable for humid or exterior conditions.

  • While the term “WBP” (Weather & Boil Proof) is still used in the trade, the correct modern spec is EN 636 / EN 314-2 Class 2 or 3.

  • Use for: Roofing, flooring, boxing-in, sheathing, garden buildings.

2. General Purpose Softwood Plywood

  • Made from pine or spruce—lightweight, cost-effective, and easy to work with.

  • Ideal for indoor projects where appearance isn’t critical.

  • Use for: Shelving, underboarding, internal carcassing.

3. Hardwood-Faced Plywood

  • A smooth, attractive finish—perfect for visible areas or furniture.

  • Often used where you want both strength and a clean surface for painting or veneering.

  • Use for: Furniture, internal joinery, wall panels, cupboards.

4. Marine Plywood (Special Order Only)

  • High-spec ply for extreme moisture conditions.

  • Often confused with WBP—not the same, and generally only needed for specialist builds like boats or wetrooms.

  • Use for: Marine work or prolonged water exposure projects.

? Is All Plywood Weatherproof?

No—only structural plywood with the correct glue bond is suitable for outdoor use.
And even then, you should:

  • Seal the edges if exposed to weather

  • Use treated battens or framing

  • Store it flat and dry before use

If in doubt, just ask—we’re here to guide you.

? Sizes & Thicknesses (Cut-to-Size Available)

We stock plywood in standard sheet size:

  • 2440mm x 1220mm (8ft x 4ft)

Common thicknesses include:

  • 3.6mm, 6mm, 9mm, 12mm, 15mm, 18mm, and 25mm

Need it cut to size?
Our professional cut-to-size service is available at our Wood Green branch. Just bring a clear cutting list (in mm) and we’ll take care of the rest.
