Plasterboard: Explained

What Is Plasterboard – And Which One Do I Need?

A quick guide from Wood Green Timber

Plasterboard is one of the most widely used building materials — whether you're putting up a stud wall, lining a ceiling, or finishing an extension. But not all plasterboard is the same. From standard boards to fire-resistant and moisture-proof options, it’s important to pick the right one for the job.

Here’s what plasterboard actually is, the different types available, and how to choose the right one for your project.

What Is Plasterboard?

Plasterboard (also called drywall or gypsum board) is made by pressing a layer of gypsum between two outer paper liners. It’s used to create flat surfaces for walls and ceilings, and it can be finished with paint, wallpaper, or plaster.

It’s quick to install, easy to cut, and comes in small or large sheets — 900mm x 1800mm (pr 6x3 in old money) and 1200mm x 2400mm (8x4).

Types of Plasterboard – Which One Do I Need?

Depending on where you’re using it, you’ll need a different type of board. Here’s a breakdown of the most common options:

1. Standard Plasterboard

  • Best for: Stud walls, ceilings, boxing in pipework, drylining

  • Finish: Can be taped and jointed or skimmed

  • Edges: Tapered or square

  • In stock? Yes – always available in common sizes

This is your go-to board for most dry jobs in living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways.

2. Moisture-Resistant Plasterboard (MR Board)

  • Best for: Bathrooms, kitchens, utility rooms, or anywhere with moisture or steam

  • Extra tip: Still needs tanking in wet zones (e.g. behind a shower)

  • In stock? Yes – green-faced MR boards available in store

Ideal for high humidity areas — don’t use standard board in wet rooms!

3. Fire-Rated Plasterboard (Pink Board)

  • Best for: Garages, loft conversions, ceilings under habitable rooms, escape routes

  • Class: Fire-resistant to help meet building regulations

  • In stock? Available to order (2–3 working day turnaround)

Essential when fire resistance is part of your spec — check with your builder or building control.

4. Soundproof Plasterboard

  • Best for: Party walls, flats, media rooms, anywhere you want to block noise

  • Combine with: RWA45 acoustic slabs or APR

  • In stock? Usually available to order

Denser than standard boards, and excellent when paired with proper sound insulation.

5. Insulated Plasterboard

  • Best for: Cold external walls, garage conversions, room-in-roof spaces

  • What it is: Plasterboard bonded to rigid PIR insulation

  • In stock? Order on request

Saves time by insulating and drylining in one go — and helps meet modern energy regs.

6. Specialist Boards (Magply & More)

  • Best for: High-spec fire barriers, timber frame sheathing, external build-ups

  • Stock status: Available to order – short lead time

We supply Magply and other specialist boards on request — just ask.
