How To: Build a Media Wall

How to Build a Media Wall

A step-by-step guide for confident DIYers

Media walls are one of the most popular modern upgrades for living rooms and open-plan spaces — and for good reason. They look smart, hide all the clutter, and add a built-in, high-spec finish without a full refurb.

The best part? You can build one yourself with a few tools, the right materials, and a clear plan.

Here’s our full step-by-step guide to building a media wall, using timber stud framing, MDF or plasterboard, and the products we stock at Wood Green Timber.

What You’ll Need (From Us)

  • Stud timber (CLS or C16) – 47x75 or 47x100

  • MDF boards – standard or MR depending on your fire type

  • Acoustic slat wall panels – optional, but on-trend

  • Drywall screws, brackets and fixings

  • Scrim tape, joint filler, or caulk for finishing

  • Optional: RWA45 insulation (for soundproofing), LED channels, paintable trims

Tools You’ll Need

  • Drill/driver

  • Saw (mitre or circular)

  • Tape measure, level, and square

  • Screwfixings

  • Filler & sanding block

  • Optional: jigsaw (for shelves or cabling), LED kit, fire fitting

Step 1: Plan Your Layout

Before you build, measure your wall and decide:

  • The width and height of your media wall

  • Where your TV and fireplace (if any) will sit

  • Any niches or shelves you want to include

  • Where your cables and sockets are going

Mark everything on the wall in pencil or masking tape so you can visualise it. Leave enough space for ventilation (especially around electric fires or enclosed AV gear).

Step 2: Build the Frame

Use 47x75 or 47x100 stud timber to create the basic structure:

  • Fix a base plate and top plate to the floor and ceiling

  • Add vertical studs at 400–600mm centres

  • Frame out the TV and fire openings carefully — these need to match your tech exactly

  • Add noggins (horizontal braces) where you’ll want to fix boards or mount shelves

Secure the frame to the back wall with brackets or long fixings for stability.

WGT Tip: Always measure your TV and fire units before you frame — don't rely on "standard" dimensions.

Step 3: Board It Out

You’ve got two main options for cladding your frame:

MDF

  • Smooth and easy to paint

  • Great for a modern, furniture-style finish

  • Use MR MDF if you’re installing a fire unit

Plasterboard

  • Ideal if you’re skimming the whole thing

  • Use scrim tape and joint filler to finish seams

  • Add angle beads for neat corners

Cut openings for your TV, fire, and any shelves or cabling as you go. Dry-fit panels before fixing to check fit.

Step 4: Add Extra Features

This is where you can personalise your media wall:

  • Add shelving using MDF offcuts or prefabricated kits

  • Install acoustic slatted panels for a modern, high-end finish

  • Run LED lighting around niches, shelves, or edges

  • Use filler and caulk to tidy up corners, seams, and joints

  • Sand and paint – choose bold, dark tones or soft neutrals for a luxury look

Step 5: Fit Your Tech

Once your paint’s dry and the frame is cured:

  • Mount your TV using the correct bracket

  • Slide your electric fire into place and connect safely

  • Fit any soundbars, consoles or storage baskets inside niches

Don’t forget to route your cables early and leave accessible panels if needed.

Optional Extras

  • RWA45 insulation – great for soundproofing party walls

  • MDF trim profiles – for added style or shelf lips

  • Paintable cable hiders – keep wiring tidy and out of sight

  • LED strip kits – add warmth and mood lighting
